Welcome to this "Baroque Cambrai" sound walk, designed by the City of Cambrai, labelled "City of Art and History". The walk takes us into the heart of the 17th and 18th centuries. In introduction, let's go back to two pivotal dates that mark this period. In 1598, Cambrai was attached to the former "Spanish" Netherlands, ruled by the kings and queens of Spain. The city entered a period of peace and prosperity that could be described as the golden age. However, the Thirty Years' War and the wars of conquest of Louis XIV plunged the region into darker times, which lasted until the victory of the Sun King at the siege and capture of Cambrai in 1677. Once the city was definitively attached to the Kingdom of France, it gradually reconnected, throughout the 18th century, with peace and prosperity. It was during this period, cloudy and bubbling, that The Baroque Art of Camres, which can still be found today in painting, sculpture and religious architecture, flourished.
