The name "Raoul" comes from Rollon, who received these lands in 911 from Charles the Simple. Rollon would have turned into ROL, RAULT, RAOULT, and finally RAOUL. But it was the Gosselins, Rollon's companions, who administered the commune for several centuries. A hamlet is still called "Mesnil-Gosselin."
