Balata garden

In the hills near Fort-de-France, a dozen kilometres north of Martinique's capital and not far from the famous Carbet mountains, an amazing attraction lies deep in the tropical forest: the Balata garden. Created in 1982 by the landscape architect Jean-Philippe Thoze around his grandparents' Creole house, this must-see attraction covers no less than two hectares of land and boasts a fabulous array of tropical plants. On a wonderful walk, as well as the magnificent viewpoints over the Carbet mountains and Fort-de-France Bay, you can also see a hundred or so varieties of palm trees, exotic flowers in dazzling colours, giant bamboo and Zen ponds delicately covered with water lilies. A haven of peace and tranquillity where you can rest in the shade of a hut in between admiring magnificent tropical plants such as hibiscus, bromeliaceae, wild orchids, red palulu and porcelain roses along your way…

As well as these marvels you'll find a lovely treetop trail made up of hanging bridges attached to giant mahogany trees. Complete with safety nets, this attraction is suitable for ages 8 and up and offers a wonderful view of the whole botanical garden. Experience unforgettable moments in the treetops, at heights of nearly fifteen metres!
