The village of Germigny-des-Prés possesses one of the oldest churches in France: the Carolingian oratory. This building is also unusual in that it boasts a magnificent 9th-century Byzantine mosaic representing the Ark of the Covenant.

The oratory of Germigny-des-Prés

Built by Theodulphe, a close adviser to Charlemagne, Bishop of Orleans and Abbot of Fleury, the oratory of Germigny-des-Prés contains a mosaic of Byzantine inspiration representing the Ark of the Covenant. It is the only mosaic of the Carolingian period preserved in France.

Open all year round.

Individual guided tour from April to September, one weekend out of two, and Wednesdays in July and August.
