Originally a 12th-century fortified castle, Saint-Germain-en-Laye Castle, located on the outskirts of Paris, has been extended, burnt down, rebuilt and modified over the years. After being a a place of residence for many rulers, it served a variety of functions: prison, hospital, riding school, barracks and military penitentiary. In 1862, Napoleon turned the castle into a museum, which is now the National Archaeological Museum.

It was in this Renaissance palace, thought of as one of the most beautiful castles in Île-de-France, that Louis XIV was born in 1638. He began his reign here, before moving to Versailles in 1682. A place of pleasure and power, Saint-Germain-en-Laye Castle has many historical secrets, as well as one of Europe's largest archaeological collections, with exhibits from all over the world.

In the old castle halls, you'll be transported more than a million years back in time. History and archaeology buffs will be enchanted by the masterpieces on display, including the Venus of Brassempouy, the skull of the Megaceros (giant deer), the statue of Vercingetorix, the Seasons mosaic from Saint-Romain-en-Gal, and Viking weapons. It truly is an amazing journey through time!

This architecturally remarkable building is surrounded by French formal gardens created by André Le Nôtre, gardener to King Louis XIV, and modelled on those at Versailles. A botanical English country garden completes the admirable scene. The interior courtyard is one of the most beautiful of the Renaissance, and the grand terrace, over 2 kilometres long, offers a breathtaking view of Paris and the Seine Valley!
