Gîte écologique La Ribérole

This is the most beautiful of houses set in the mountains with a breath-taking view over the valley below. The facilities are basic, but perfectly sufficient, and the setting is unequalled. The house is found at the end of a narrow track (accessible by car) on the side of a steep valley. It is set in woods with a footpath running close by and plenty of opportunities to walk and climb. It you want a really rural place to spend your holiday, this can be thoroughly recommended.

We were welcomed warmly on arrival and thoroughly enjoyed the well equipped gite and the glorious views of the mountains. Our holiday was perfect. It was one of the happiest holidays we have had. Fiet and Lucy are great hosts who look after you and never intrude on your privacy. Thank you. We want to return!

We stayed at La Riberole for two weeks to cycle and walk in the Ariege. We received a very warm welcome and insight into a slower, more self-sufficient pace of life in this remote and beautiful place. The gite has been carefully restored with natural materials and was very clean, well equipped, comfortable and warm, with plentiful water (especially good for drinking) and excellent wifi connectivity. The mountain view from the gite is stunning, and there is always the soothing sound of the Arac rushing far below. We saw a red squirrel in the trees nearby and innumerable raptors in the valleys. We were unable to cycle from the door due to the steep access road, so we transported our bikes to begin our rides in the foothills, and were rewarded with many great ones. Our favourite destination quickly became the Petites Pyrenees north of St Girons, where a panoramic view of the snow-capped mountain chain formed a backdrop to our efforts. Don't overlook this area for a springtime visit, when the Pyrenean wildflower meadows are at their spectacular best. The weather can be cool and rather variable, but you can have the Grand Sites virtually to yourself. A walk to the glacially-formed Cirque de Cagateille in solitude is an awesome experience.
