City gate of Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, the Aixe-sur-Vienne town is located in the department of Haute-Vienne. Member of the urban area of Limoges, it is twenty kilometers from Saint-Junien.
The town of Aixe-sur-Vienne take its name from a Latin character, Axius, and the river that runs through the Vienne. City pleasant and charming, it has a beautiful architectural heritage and has even been nicknamed Aixe-la-Jolie by President of the Republic, Raymond Poincaré, passing through the town.
The surrounding landscape also is renowned for Aixe-sur-Vienne remains a paradise for hikers and other sports and outdoor recreation, including through the presence of part of the GR 654 on its territory.
Aixe-sur-Vienne is the venue of a large number of tourist monuments that attract many visitors each year.
Built in the nineteenth century, the chapel of Our Lady Arliquet is the scene of an important pilgrimage. Neo-Gothic brick and limestone, it welcomes in its midst a beautiful Pietà sixteenth century venerated every seven years at the time of Ostensions. One can also see relics came from Rome catacombs of St. Cornelia and Fulgence Saints Honoré and Antime. A park with a Way of the Cross and a cave of the Agony, make a small Lourdes.
In the center of the cemetery, St. John chapel has been listed historical monument. Built in the thirteenth century, it has a beautiful Limousin Gothic arch.
According to legend built to accommodate a fragment of the True Cross, the Holy Cross Church dates from the thirteenth century. Changed in the nineteenth century, it has a Gothic portal Limousin style.
Tower Jeanne d'Albret, listed historical monument, is the remains of the castle of the town. Located on a rocky outcrop, it dominates the confluence of the Aixette and Vienna.
Private property, the castle dates from the sixteenth century Losmonerie and was listed as an historic monument. You can still see some parts dating back to the fifteenth century.
In the town of Aixe-sur-Vienne, visitors can admire a medieval garden on the banks of Vienna, or the bridge Malassert. The latter, of the fourteenth century, is the only remnant of an old wooden bridge.
The city is crossed by paths of famous hiking, as the GR4 linking Royan in Grasse, or the GR 654, the road to Saint-Jacques through Vézelay.
Lively, the city is regularly Aixe-sur-Vienne the cultural or other entertainment venue that attracts many visitors.
The Aixe-sur-Vienne market is held every Friday morning on the square René Gillet. Every first Friday morning of each month, a fair is also present.
In May, up to the great carnival of Aixe-sur-Vienne with its many rides.
Also in May, the Coquelicontes festival is the opportunity to attend lectures for all ages.
For the festivities of July 14, the city has its traditional festival of strikes with rides, entertainment and a firework display on Vienna.
In November, the Monster Kid Festival offers cinema-concerts in the city.
