Arcizans-Avant

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Hautes-Pyrénées

Small village in the Hautes-Pyrénées, about thirty kilometers from Tarbes, Arcizans-Avant is located in the heart of Bigorre, in the Pyrenees National Park. Known for its exceptional natural heritage, the rural town is located at the gates of Argelès-Gazost, not far from Préchac, Uz and Arras-en-Lavedan.

Arcizans-Avant has a history strongly linked to that of its castle. Taken by the English troops of the famous Black Prince during the Hundred Years' War, the latter notably served as a base for the English to invade all of Aquitaine.

Of this glorious past there are still some vestiges to be discovered during a stay in the surroundings.

Things to see and do

Listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Martin church is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. Disoriented and completely restored in the 12th century, it reveals a rectangular bell tower with double imperial curves and covered with slate from the middle of the 18th century.

While strolling through the village, you can also admire the so-called Prince Noir castle. Located more than 600 meters above sea level, it has been recently renovated and fitted out to offer three guest rooms for rent.

Several marked hiking trails are also accessible to help you discover the beauty of the Pyrenees.

Events and festivities

Every third weekend of July, place to the patronal festivals with the program the famous ball of the pepiots, a musical meal, a night market, a toro del fuego or games for children.

In October, the festival committee offers its famous winter ball.
