Originally the church of a famous Benedictine abbey founded in the 9th century, the Saint-Pierre abbey of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is now classified as a Historic Monument. Built in the 12th century in a Limousin Romanesque style, it has majestic proportions and pale ocher sandstone facades.
Dominated by a bell tower, the Saint-Pierre abbey of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne presents an incredible sculpted tympanum representing the return of Christ, while inside, visitors can take an ambulatory to discover the barrel vault on cruciform batteries.
The treasure of the church is not lacking in interest either, with a 12th century Virgin and Child, an 11th century lantern reliquary of Byzantine origin or a champlevé enamel reliquary from the 13th century.
The abbey church is freely accessible every day, and guided tours are offered by the Tourist Office.
