Condat is a commune in the Lot department, in the Occitanie region, 10 km northeast of Martel.
Limitrophe to the northeast of Corrèze, its 6 km² territory is crossed by the course of the Tourmente, a tributary of the Dordogne. Between the Causses, the Dordogne valley and the foothills of the Massif Central, the locality has preserved rural and bucolic landscapes, covered with agricultural areas for 62% of its area, but also with meadows (32%) and forests (8 %).
The municipal boundaries varied significantly during the 19th century. If the town absorbed the neighboring village of Saint-Félix after the Revolution, Condat was in turn suppressed and integrated into Saint-Michel de Banners in 1805 before being recreated in 1841... In 1912, finally, it lost part of its lands to the west when the new commune of Quatre-Routes-du-Lot was formed…
These events did not, however, change its agricultural vocation, with a large part dedicated to fruit production.
Now counting 410 inhabitants, Condat is verdant and peaceful. What to satisfy in particular the amateurs of excursions.
The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the main heritage site of the town, where in the village as in the hamlets, a number of dwellings with the typical architecture of Haut Quercy have also been preserved (exposed stones, dovecotes, roofs slates or tiles).
Dependent at the time on the priory of Friat and therefore on the abbey of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, the church listed in the Inventory dates from the 12th century for its oldest parts, in Romanesque style. It was subsequently remodeled in the 16th and 19th centuries.
The Romanesque portal is original, but side chapels were added later, which were transformed into aisles in the 19th century. In the meantime, the nave has been vaulted. Nowadays, these rib and groin vaults have also been installed at the level of the side aisles and the apse. In addition, some of the carved decorations (foliage, animals, human head) of the capitals adorning the arches of the portal have been preserved.
Apart from a few elements of small heritage (crosses, dovecotes), it is the natural and environmental wealth of the locality that should then be discovered. It is thus necessary to highlight the marshes of Fondial, in the north of the commune, which are protected under "Natura 2000" because of the specific fauna (molluscs) and flora which are present there.
This sensitive area can mark out a hike, other routes may include the few local woods, the banks of rivers or crops and orchards.
Larger loops lead to the Dordogne valley to the south and its castles. Maps and information on +33 5 65 33 22 00.
