Six kilometers from Lyon, in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, lies the charming town of Écully. Located in the Rhône department, it is located in the heart of the Monts du Lyonnais.
Formerly covered with an immense forest, the present territory of Écully has been populated since the Gallo-Roman period. From the 15th century, the city took advantage of the economic and social development of Lyon, hosting beautiful secondary residences built for the great Lyon merchants. At that time, the city of the Rhone also became an important place of passage for the traders or the spice merchants who go to the great fairs of Lyon.
Still today, the city of Écully remains a rich residential city, as evidenced by the many remains of mansions built between the sixteenth and nineteenth century. In addition to its proximity to Lyon and its tourist sites, it also presents an architectural heritage not lacking interest.
In the XIXth century, Écully became an important stronghold of the Lyonnaise bourgeoisie, as evidenced by the houses still visible today. As you walk through the city, you can admire the manor house of the Greysoliere, the Malrochet, the Écully castle, the Louis XIII castle, the Chantepie castle from the 18th century, and the charming Le Treuil small mansion built in the 17th century.
More recent residences are also visible, such as the Vivier, a late 19th century neo-Gothic residence, Les Marroniers and their Louis XVI style, La Dombarière, a beautiful Florentine villa, the Bruyères, or the Laporte mansion -Recamier and its beautiful French garden.
Built in the middle of the 19th century on the remains of a first building, Saint-Blaise church houses a 4th century Christian funerary inscription and a bas-relief from the early 16th century. In neo-Romanesque style, it also has seventeenth-century baptismal fonts.
Several rural chapels also take place in the commune, as is the mill of the seigneury of Grange-Blanche of the eighteenth century or the dovecote of Randin.
The Brévenne aqueduct, still classified as a Historic Monument, still has a few vestiges. It used to serve the city of Lugdunum, the present Lyon, especially in the district of Fourvière.
