The municipality was occupied in the Neolithic, first known occupation. Some testimonies of occupation in the iron age (about thirty mounds) and traces of Gallo-Roman villa are present in two or three places of the municipality. The first map where the village is mentioned was created in 936. The pond of Ruffaud appears for the first time on the map of Cassini around 1760. In 1912, the cascades of Gimel are the first site to be classified in France.
