Castle of Jossigny

Monument in Jossigny

The castle of Jossigny is located in the town of the same name, in the department of Seine-et-Marne, 30 km east of Paris and a few kilometers south of Lagny-sur-Marne.

It was built in 1753 for Claude-François Leconte des Graviers, adviser to the Parliament of Paris.

The lands of Jossigny had belonged to the Orgemont family since the 14th century when they were ceded in 1574 to Jacques Robert. His descendants kept the estate until the 20th century and the castle was donated to the State by Baron Guy de Roig after the Second World War. The site is thus now managed by the Center des Monuments Nationaux.

The interest of the castle is to have been designed by Jacques Hardouin-Mansart de Sagonne (1711-1778), the last representative of the famous line of architects. He put into practice the advice of Charles-Etienne Briseux, author of the treatise "The art of building country houses", published in 1743.

The castle is also a perfect example of the Rocaille (or Rococo) style., which is characterized by its elaborate ornamentation. At Jossigny, Mansart called on the artist and decorator Nicolas Pineau.

The architect kept the foundations and vaulted cellars of an earlier mansion. The 18th century castle also uses the same layout for the buildings: the three pavilions of the main building are framed by side pavilions which house a chapel for one and the kitchen for the other. As for the courtyard, it is bordered on one side by the orangery and on the other by the stables, a low side courtyard welcoming the outbuildings.

The vocation of "pleasure house" (for short stays and receptions) is found both in the architectural layout and in the fittings and decorations.

The castle obviously protected as historical monuments has a beautifully crafted park. However, the ensemble is only open to the public during cultural events. Information on +33 1 60 05 24 43.
