La Garde

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Var

Perched on a rocky peak, La Garde is the typical representation of a magnificent medieval city. Originally built on volcanic land, the town is surrounded by the majesty of Mount Coudon and the expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. The old medieval village is home to the imagination, where many craftsmen will share their passion. Between forest and coastline, the landscape is set out in beautiful terraces where the garrigue spreads out as far as the eye can see. The old stones, guardians of the ancestral secrets, promise you a voyage in the time unpublished and unforgettable. And to plunge completely into the ambience of the medieval city, do not miss the Farigoulettes, the musical group of traditional folklore. Vigie de Toulon, La Garde has undergone multiple assaults over the centuries, but has managed to preserve its architectural heritage despite the fierce attacks of the enemy. A city full of history, a seaside town... La Garde mixes several faces.

Things to see and do

What marks the most at La Garde is its impressive historical heritage. The village can be enjoyed along the cobbled streets bordered by the vestiges of the past. From the Tower of the Clock built in 1777 to the Place Justin Mussou, the theater of a bloody revolt in 1789, your footsteps will lead you into the old town surrounded by two ramparts with multiple doors. Among the remarkable buildings, the Restanques will attract your attention. This building built before 1584 houses in its old cellars, the museum of vine and wine. From the feudal castle, there is only the southwest tower, rehabilitated as a windmill in 1820. Another vestige not to be missed: the seigneurial windmill rehabilitated in the 70s. The fortress of Sainte Marguerite dating from the 11th century Still stands today. A few steps further, the Well of Hyères, dug before 1820, is the object of a mysterious legend according to which the well never dries up even in a period of drought. The walk continues through the old seigniorial dovecote that already existed in 1580, it is not less than 5 meters in height and 7 meters in diameter. You can not fail to notice the magnificent Hotel de Ville dating from 1884, just like the old town hall and the Saint-Maur oratory built at the end of the 17th century. The castle of the clos is a huge group and now serves as a foster home Fémina.

The religious heritage also counts its treasures. The chapels of Saint-Charles-Borromée and Sainte-Marguerite are worth visiting, as is the Notre-Dame church dating from the 12th century and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.

La Garde is also the framework for intense sports activities. And there is something for everyone: swimming pool, bowling alley, ice rink, tennis, golf... you will not be bored. The surrounding forest promises beautiful walks and cycling. As for the coast, it shelters beautiful beaches and a small fishing port for moments of absolute relaxation. The underwater trail is beautiful and must not be missed in order to discover the local marine fauna.
