A village in the Hautes-Alpes, La Sauze-du-Lac is located on the foothills of the Morgon peak, on the edge of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This small village of about 150 inhabitants is located about twenty kilometers from Gap, not far from Savines-le-Lac.
At the crossroads of Ubaye and Durance, the village of Sauze-du-Lac owes its name to the Latin Salix, meaning Saule. It is mainly known for its natural heritage, as well as for its public beach located at about 800 meters above sea level. Lovers of life in the great outdoors are seduced by the calm and preserved landscapes that surround this commune ideal for a family holiday.
The small town of the Alps also has an interesting architectural heritage and an important list of fun and cultural activities.
The public beach Port Saint-Pierre takes place at 780 meters of altitude on the arm of the Ubaye of the lake of Serre-Ponçon. The Pavillon Bleu label is perfect for the quality of its banks and its water, it is a true piece of paradise. There is a supervised swimming in the summer season and there is a beach with picnic areas, volleyball and petanque courts and a snack bar, all on 2,000 m² of lawn. It is also possible to practice various nautical activities such as sailing, pedalo, jet-ski or canoe. The site has in particular a marina of thirty places.
Geological curiosity, the site of the Demoiselles capped takes place on the road of Savines. Classified, it presents several fairy chimneys, kinds of natural columns made of friable rock and the subject of many legends more or less supposed.
Set in the heart of the village, the Saint-Martin chapel is a religious site dating from the 7th century. It is accessible via a small dirt road starting on the parking lot at the entrance of Sauze-du-Lac. Situated on a hill, it dominates the valleys of the Durance and the Ubaye. You will also enjoy an excellent view of the area and the lake via the belvedere.
Do not miss to visit the Serre-Ponçon animal park. The site reveals in particular the fauna of the Hautes-Alpes, as well as many raptors.
Several marked hiking trails for pedestrians or cyclists are also accessible in and around the village of Sauze-du-Lac. The trail of the balconies of the lake, in particular, allows to cross the forest on the Ubac slope of the town.
