The town of Marmande lies in a fertile market gardening region and is known as the "tomato capital". It offers visitors a range of interesting heritage, including a Gothic church with Renaissance cloister, half-timbered houses in the Labat district and Place Clemenceau, a square with a statue dedicated to the love apple.
The 13th- and 14th-century Gothic Notre-Dame church, whose facade features a beautiful rose window, contains an Entombment of Christ and a 17th-century gilded wood Baroque altarpiece. Adjoining the church is a Renaissance cloister dating from 1540 with a well-preserved gallery. It is flanked by a French-style formal garden with "Remarkable Garden" status that contains beautiful topiary art.
Fans of alternative music should not miss the famous Garorock festival held on the end of June/early July!
Marmande, central city territory Val de Garonne, a leading fruit and vegetable gardens of the great Southwest, love is the heart of Aquitaine. Stones weathered by history to gentle curves of the hills, Marmande displays the variety of talents. Capital tomato, proud of AOC Côtes du Marmandais, the city is the spring flowers, gourmet and lyric summer cultural over the month.
A little history: In the early centuries of the Christian era, there was only a hamlet called Granon, where, in 673, King of Austrasia Childeric 2nd decided to convene a council. In the 10th century, built a "Mirmande" that is to say, a house designed to monitor the Garonne. In 1182, Richard Coeur de Lion gave birth to the city Marmande by granting a charter of customs with special exemptions. In 1229, after the war against the Cathars, Marmande was proclaimed "new land of France. Its location on the border between the Guyenne et Gascogne said that during the Hundred Years War, she was alternately French or English. After this, the city could grow: several monasteries settled as that of the Franciscans since 1275, which was burned during the wars of religion. In 1594, the city submitted to Henry of Navarre. In the 18th century, a boat service post was created between Bordeaux and Toulouse, and in 1838 we built the first suspension bridge (rebuilt in 1932). 1839 was the year of the opening of the telegraph Chappe and 1855 that the inauguration of the railway line Bordeaux-Toulouse 1856 was one of the first navigation canal de Garonne.
In short, Marmande is an open city that does not forget its rich past.
