Meucon is a commune of Morbihan, in Brittany region, 8 km north of Vannes.
Independent parish in 1779 only, the town was created in 1790. Until then, it was a dependency of the bishops of Vannes.
The site where the village would later develop was first renowned for a 12th century clumsy: the lepers who lived there and lived in adjacent dwellings specialized in the production of ropes. The legacy of this secular tradition, the last corderie of the town closed its doors in 1914. Meucon was also famous for the manufacture of fouaces, pastry made of water, salt and wheat flour. The last dedicated unit lasted until the beginning of the 1970s. If the fouaces of Meucon were appreciated, it is because of the quality of the water of the sources of the territory. A natural wealth that has for its part continued: the water drawn from Meucon still feeds the city of Vannes.
Covering an area of 5.7 km², the territory remained green lends itself to hiking. With its heritage and sports, counting 2,300 inhabitants, the town is a pleasant stop in the immediate vicinity of Vannes and the wonders of the Gulf of Morbihan.
In terms of religious heritage, a discovery tour of the locality can begin with the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. It was built in 1497 as evidenced by an inscription in the choir, and was remodeled in 1838. From the original building, are still in place the frame of the choir and a window at the bedside. However, it is partly masked by a 17th century altarpiece decorated with coats of arms and whose center is occupied by a painting of the Rosary of 1858. The sides are home to a statue of the Virgin and Child and another of Saint Madeleine. In the course of the nineteenth century, the church was equipped with two wings and a tower.
To see again, a chapel dedicated to St. Bartholomew dating from the fifteenth century on the hamlet of Cranhuac, and many crucifixes and crosses, including that of Guerne, composed in a stone in one piece.
Moreover, with reference obviously to the rich hydrography of the territory, a walk is dotted with wells or old wash-houses.
In terms of heritage finally, dedicated again to the exploitation of the formidable water resources of Meucon, the 100 m long aqueduct built in 1912 to cross the course of Guern and feed Vannes, and those of the Grée and Tréviantec do not miss interest.
Hiking trails have been designed and marked precisely to highlight this aspect of local history: the circuit of sources, on the one hand, and that of the Aqueduct, on the other hand. Other routes can be taken, leading for example to the coast. Maps and information on +33 2 97 47 24 34.
