Montréal-la-Cluse

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Ain

Located in the Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the commune of Montréal-la-Cluse is nestled in the Haut Bugey, only about forty kilometers from Bourg-en-Bresse. It takes place in the heart of the Jura massif, not far from Nantua, Brion and Oyonnax.

Originally a grouping of several hamlets of which La Cluse was the main one, Montréal-la-Cluse was in the 19th century a major railway and road junction. Occupied since the Middle Ages, the town which has changed its name several times over the centuries now attracts visitors with the charm of its landscapes, its dynamism and its proximity to some of the most beautiful natural sites in the area.

Things to see and do

Passing through Montréal-la-Cluse, you can discover the ruins of the castle of Montreal erected on Mount Bey in the middle of the 13th century. This former fortified castle, dismantled in the 17th century, was subsequently replaced by a new stately home in Louis XVI style.

While strolling in the town, do not miss to admire the Gothic-style Saint-Maurice church, before taking the tourist railway line of the Hirondelles, which stops at Montréal-la-Cluse.

To take advantage of the local flora and fauna and a little walk in the sun, head for the Montreal forest and its various trails.
