Castle of Nemours

Monument in Nemours

A former fortified castle erected in the 12th century, the castle of Nemours now benefits from an inscription as a Historic Monument for its chapel and a classification for the rest of the site. Transformed into a museum in 1901 and completely restored in the 2000s, it now reveals a collection of more than 20,000 works of art exhibited during temporary thematic exhibitions.

Labeled Museum of France, the castle of Nemours sits along the Loing, near an old ford. It has the particularity of being one of the only city castles in Île-de-France to have been preserved.

The castle of Nemours thus consists of a large quadrangular enclosure with corner turrets, a rectangular keep also with corner turrets, a gallery on five levels, a watchtower and of an oratory. The latter, built in the 12th century, reveals a fine example of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic art.
