Small border town with the Dordogne, Salles-Lavalette includes some 335 inhabitants. The town is located in the Occitan area and is one of the limitations with the langue d'oil. The remote location of major cities of Angouleme and Perigueux in fact a place where there is good food and quiet.
The gastronomic specialties Salles-Lavalette include both those of Périgord and Charente. It is possible to enjoy a good foie gras and cricket Charente.
The vineyards of Cognac communal ran down hills before being ravaged by phylloxera in the 18th century. Large cellars and some converted mansions recall the heyday. If the vines were not replanted, ranchers took over, making the surrounding landscape flowering rapeseed, sunflowers, tobacco, wheat, barley or corn.
The town is ranked among the villages in bloom.
