Sauvigny-le-Bois is a town located in the department of Yonne, Burgundy and Franche-Comte, 59 km southeast of Auxerre.
The village borders Avallon, city served by the A6, which has developed in Sauvigny a business park to include hotel property. The town now has about 800 inhabitants.
However, it is a landscape of groves and forests overlooking the communal area, which marks the transition from the Morvan to the south, and the Earth Plain Burgundy, known as the "Piedmont Morvan".
Careers, tile and agriculture have long contributed to the prosperity of the village, with a notable architectural heritage due to the presence of two families (Berthier, a member of which was intendant of the generality of Paris during the Revolution, and that Cordier exploited limestone flux) and a former priory.
Sauvigny-le-Bois, declining in the early twentieth century, found some momentum in the 1970s via the construction of housing estates and craft activities and services in his village "center" as in his seven hamlets, but without altering its environment and pleasant living environment.
After the Saint Vincent church, rebuilt largely completed in 1833 and more recently by a medieval-style porch, making the visitor to step Sauvigny-le-Bois will be especially interested in the two castles that make up the town and its ancient priory.
Private property, in the heart of the village, the castle of Sauvigny was built in the eighteenth and remodeled under the First Empire by Berthier family on the site of an older castle. It was listed in the inventory of historical monuments in 1996.
In the hamlet Montjalin, east of the village, the castle of the same name eighteenth date and is surrounded by a pleasant wooded park. A visit is also the former priory of Saint-Jean-les-Bonshommes. Founded in the thirteenth century under the Grandmontines, historical monument, it was considerably damaged during the Revolution. however remains its remarkable chapel. The buildings (or their remains) were bought in 1905 by the Society of Avallon Studies to prevent the most remarkable stones are sold and dispersed. The site also hosts conferences and art exhibitions throughout the year.
Back in the village, a relaxing walk is possible along the Alley of the virgin oak-lined hundreds.
Finally, eco-industrial tourism lovers can visit the "Ecopôle" Sauvigny (operated by a private company) where household waste (packaging plant) is sorted and recycled. A biogas processing unit has been created and a route dedicated to biodiversity fitted (kites raptors can be observed in winter). Guided tours from April 1 to October 30. In mid-September during Heritage Days, the town in connection with associations offers a special event at the former Saint John priory (book fair, exhibition...). Information for mayor in +33 3 86 34 32 35.
The village festival committee also proposes several annual events: the animations of the Feast of Saint-Vincent (around January 22), Frequently Asked flowers in mid-May and a Christmas market. Information +33 3 86 34 32 35.
