Former Benedictine monastery, the Saint-Médard abbey of Soissons was one of the most powerful religious foundations under the Carolingians. Listed as a Historic Monument for its crypt and chapel, the 6th century abbey was razed in 1793 following the events of the French Revolution.
All that remains of the former Saint-Médard abbey today is a pre-Romanesque crypt considered to be the oldest monument in the town. Composed of around ten chapels, this 9th century building originally housed the tombs of Bishop Saint Médard and of Clotaire and Sigebert, the sons and grandsons of Clovis.
The crypt remains accessible for guided tours throughout the year.
