Between river and hillside was born Tonneins. But this birth was not painless. Indeed, the story tells us that two villages both bearing the name Tonneins were born on the banks of the Garonne. One overlooked the riverbed while his neighbor stretched languidly downstream. One took the name of Tonneins-Dessus and the other, that of Tonneins-Below. The two cities were not spared by the wars. One hundred years as the wars of religion. Sheltering many Protestants, they quickly became a high place of history. Strong heads both, they did not escape the wrath of royalty that simply razed the two villages in the early seventeenth century during the revolts. The two Tonneins did not let down and rebuilt themselves patiently. The economic boom gained momentum in the cultivation of hemp and tobacco. Rope factories were developing, but it was the establishment of the Royal Manufacture in 1721 that had the expected leverage effect. Shortly after the revolution, the two Tonneins finally came together to form one and the same village. Private manufactures flourished until 1976, when the end of the monopoly also brought about the end of the boom of Tonneins, which gradually declined until 2000. You will not be able to go to Tonneins without tasting the famous ham of Tonneins. Secret recipe and congratulation of the kingship have given its nobility to this specialty still today very appreciated.
Tonneins has not been lost and has a rich historical heritage and a remarkable natural exposure. During your visit, you will not be able to miss the quays overlooking the Garonne by a good twenty meters. A magnificent view opens up to you and the ride looks nice. It is punctuated by the old wash house and the building of the royal factory. Just cross the bridge built in the twentieth century to continue the walk. You will then see the house of the Passeur, the only survivor of the destruction of the two villages in the early seventeenth century. You can admire the Roches de Reculay. At the water's edge, they seem like a dark mass lurking in the bed of the Garonne. They are today the happiness of kayakers in search of thrills. Later, you can put your picnic basket and have a good meal admiring this view so striking and peaceful. You will also be able to discover the tobacco factory known as the tobacco factory of Tonneins while strolling in the city. Further, the bandstand of the place Jean Jaurès awaits you.
The religious buildings also reserve you some nice surprises. The Notre-Dame church dates from the 19th century, as does the Saint-Pierre church. You can admire their beautiful architecture and discover the treasures they house.
A short walk in the public garden will allow you to rest in this beautiful green space, but also to discover remarkable trees throughout your walk.
