Legend has it that the town derives its name from what the town has emerged from the forest - from the Latin "silva" meaning "forest". The forest Verrières gateway to Angers, in fact covered this territory until the millennium.
The archaeological remains of a motte dating at least the 12th century and 15th century moat are still visible in the district of La Haie Joulain.
