Castle Freudeneck is located in the municipality of Wangenbourg-Engenthal, in the Lower Rhine, 20 km south of Saverne.
At the heart of the natural and historic region of Alsace's Switzerland, it was built around 1300 to the end of a ridge at 390 m above sea level, overlooking the river Mossig.
They are avowed related Andlau family who commissioned the building. Burnt down in 1408 and rebuilt the castle was definitely ruined in the late fifteenth century, after new attacks.
According to historians, the castle was Freudeneck least a stately home than a small fortification dedicated to monitoring of the valley and that allowed soldiers stationed there, in case of danger, to prevent castle near Wangenbourg.
On the site, which is subject to protection as historical monuments, there are still the foundations of a circular tower and wall elements in poor condition.
The castle is accessible from the Freudeneck Wangenbourg Castle via a marked trail or from the road.
