Also known as Dreux à la feuille, Feuille de Dreux is a cheese resembling camembert, but less thick, and covered with a chestnut tree leaf. It was once enjoyed by farm labourers who ate it at the end of a meal or as a snack in the fields.
Feuille de Dreux has a bloomy rind, and a soft, creamy centre with a lovely forest scent. This fruity-tasting cheese is artisan-made with semi-skimmed milk. It has only 30% fat, and goes very well with a sweet red wine. When it's too old to eat on its own, this cheese can be marinated in cider, to make a paste to spread on bread.
The chestnut leaf was originally placed on it to stop the cheeses from sticking together. Indeed, they were once stacked on top of each other in wooden boxes.
