Small town of Aveyron, in Occitan region Camarès set at the foot of Lacaune, eighty kilometers from Béziers. It is located near Saint-Afrique, and Sylvanès Montagnol on the banks of the Dourdou Camarès.
Old, the common Camarès mainly developed in the Middle Ages, such as the seat of a Carolingian viguerie the ninth century. Important Protestant stronghold in the sixteenth century, during the religious wars, it was part of the four major fortified cities of Rouergue. It is now mainly focused breeding sheep and producing milk essential to the manufacture of the famous Roquefort.
The visitors passing through the village will appreciate its authenticity and its rich architecture typical of this part of the region.
Built in the tenth century and rebuilt in the fifteenth, the castle of Montaigut still stands proudly on the town. Located on a rocky outcrop, it takes place in an ancient necropolis of the Middle Ages. In simple watchtower origin, it expands and modernizes over its many owners welcoming today a permanent cultural activities center. Inside, one can admire its arched rooms with spiral staircase, bedrooms, kitchens, a cistern cut into the rock or plasterwork of the seventeenth century.
Listed building, Sylvanès Abbey is another major tourist attraction in the area. Founded in the twelfth century, this former Cistercian abbey was given a major restoration campaign in the 1970s to become the seat of a center of culture, art and spirituality. Visitors can enjoy arts courses, symposia or thematic conferences. You can still discover many original buildings including the cloister has maintained a gallery, the sacristy, the chapter house and its decor stucco rockery, the scriptorium and the abbey. The latter is a good example of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic. Labeled Cultural Center meeting, the site also hosts the Zamoyski museum presents some fifty works of Polish sculptor August Zamoyski, bequeathed by his widow.
Walking through the town, be sure not to stop and enjoy the chapel of St. Peter of Issis, the Saint-Michel-nineteenth century, the Holy Cross Church Ouyre, the Pont old eleventh century or the old gateway to the upper town.
