Condé-sur-l'Escaut is a town of nearly 10,000 inhabitants located in the Nord department. Located on the Scheldt, which has been diverted and no longer passes through Condé, it is also part of the suburbs of Valenciennes and is located around fifty kilometers from Lille.
Formerly located in Belgian Gaul, the town of Condé-sur-l'Escaut became Frankish at the time of the Invasions. In the past, the town owed its fame to its mining, before the closure of the last coal mine in 1989. Now, this rather residential town is entirely focused on tourism, with a fairly significant historical and architectural heritage.

The Château de l'Arsenal, built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style by Nicolas d'Avesnes, was remodeled in a Philippian style in the 15th century. Since the 20th century, the chatelet has hosted private accommodation. You can still admire a water mill from the end of the 15th century which served as a dovecote after the French Revolution. Not far away, it is possible to admire the châtelet of the Hostel de Bailleul dating from the beginning of the 15th century.
Often remodeled, the urban wall of Condé-sur-l'Escaut originally dates from the 12th century. It was notably transformed in the 18th century by Vauban, before seeing the addition of blockhouses in the 20th century.
Walking through the town, you can admire the former convent of the Gray Nuns from the 16th century, the Vautourneux gate from the beginning of the 18th century, or even a former coaching inn.
Dating from 1751, the Saint-Wasnon church has been classified as a Historic Monument. Mainly classical in style, it also has a bell tower from 1627, in brick, stone and sandstone. Inside, it is possible to admire stalls decorated with musical instruments, as well as a beautiful painting of the assumption of Mary.
Impossible to miss the town hall from the end of the 18th century, the Hermitage castle listed as a Historic Monument, or the pretty town kiosk.
The Chabaud-Latour nature and leisure center is an opportunity to enjoy nature and learn fishing or take beautiful walks.
