Feignies

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Nord

City of the North of more than 7000 inhabitants, in Hauts-de-France, Feignies takes place eighty kilometers from Lille, on the Franco-Belgian border. Member of the urban unit of Maubeuge, it is located between Valenciennes and Jeumont, not far from Mairieux, Elesmes or Neuf-Mesnil.

Of ancient origin, the territory of Feignies was occupied by the Nervians, the Romans and then the Barbarians before passing into the hands of the Franks thanks to Clovis I. However, it was not until the second half of the 11th century that the town really developed around its first church. Passing successively over the years under the Flemish, Burgundian, Spanish or French yoke, it remained focused on agriculture for a long time before specializing in the 19th century in the ceramics industry and then in metallurgy.

Things to see and do

Built in the second half of the 19th century, the Saint-Martin church takes place on the remains of a first building from the 11th century. In bricks, it reveals a very beautiful interior inside, including a sculpture listed as an Historic Monument and a magnificent sculpted Stations of the Cross.

While strolling in the city, you will be able to also admire the Marie Curie school taking place in the buildings of the old school of the girls of the first half of the XXth century and classified as Historical Monuments, or several chapels and oratories dotted around the town.

Built in the second half of the 19th century, like the communal church, as part of the Séré de Rivières system, the Leveau fort was then one of six forts built to protect Maubeuge from attacks. Covering an area of over 80,000 m², it was largely restored in the 1990s, now housing an interesting museum which hosts an annual exhibition of vintage cars.

Several marked hiking trails allow you to explore the local flora and fauna, like the Bois de la Taillette circuit of 16 or 12.5 km. This last crosses Gognies-Chaussée and Mairieux and allows in particular to admire the fort of Leveau.
