The botanical garden of Upper Brittany (formerly known as Parc Floral de Haute Bretagne) is located in the municipality of Châtellier Ille-et-Vilaine, 10 km north of Fougeres.
Vast 25 hectares, the garden was first created in 1847 as a romantic English park around the castle of Foltière former mansion bought and remodeled in 1820 by the family of Buffards Frontin.
For much of the twentieth century, the site is left somewhat abandoned and in 1995, the estate and its grounds are restored by their new owner, Alain Jouno.
At first, this landscape 16 thematic gardens inviting poetic reverie or evoking memories of travel and the very history of the gardens.
Nine other gardens are designed in a second time. To date, the entire park and features 25 gardens of various styles (French, English, botanical or contemporary), each with its own identity and atmosphere while adapting to the geography and topography of the area. The site is also bordered by barriers of trees.
In general, three themes predominate: the gardens of Arcadia, romantic gardens and grounds of dusk.
It lists thousands of plant species (fruit trees, perennials, remarkable trees, flowers). The blooms follow the seasons (camellias, magnolias and daffodils in March, hyacinths and azaleas in April...) and a preferred share is for plants known at home in the region (according to its basement).
The field also includes children with dedicated spaces like a prehistoric park, a maze and a suspension bridge. A tea room and a restaurant are also located in the park grounds.
Remarkable Garden label synonymous with bucolic scenery, the park is open daily from 1 March to 15 November.
