Castle of Looze

Monument in Looze

The castle of Looze is located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Yonne, a few kilometers northeast of Joigny.

Until the 17th century, the lands of Looze belonged to lords who did not reside there. This is the case of Guiot de by marriage to that of the Piedefers, known to have a number of parliamentarians. In May 1628 Pierre de Hannicques, already lord of Cheny and, notably, first squire of the Duke of Orléans, brother of Louis XIII, bought the estate. In 1640, his son Roger de Hannicques, who directed an equestrian academy in Paris and frequented the Court, was the new master of the place.

Later, his heir Alexandre de Chassy was the first and only marquis of 'another land when it is not carried without reason...

In 1736, the Tulles de Villefranche family was the owner, and from 1743 to 1760, the castle of Looze underwent significant transformations under the direction of a famous architect, François II Franque…

Dismembered in 1894, the castle was finally bought in 1959 by Henri Becq, an architect by trade, and a large-scale restoration was initiated, which his descendants continued.

In 2013, the chapel was renovated and an art craftsman from the town, who attended the Boulle school, took part in the work.

The park also regains its original luster. Now listed in the Inventory, the 17th century castle, embellished in the 18th century, remains an example of classic style. Particularly noteworthy are a wrought iron railing, the porch, numerous interior fittings (woodwork, fireplaces) and the chapel. The building is made up of a quadrangular three-story dwelling with a one-story higher pavilion to the west projecting from each facade.

The private property is not open to the public but the silhouette of the castle can be observed during a walk. Information on +33 3 86 62 11 05.
