Located at Montélimar, in the Drôme, the Château des Adhémar now benefits from a classification as a Historic Monument. Erected in the 11th century by the Count of Toulouse, it was originally a castle motte. Transformed into a palace in the 12th century, its aim was to show all the wealth of the Adhémar family.
Decorated with the Narbonne tower in the 14th century, the castle was largely destroyed at the end of the 16th century by order of the Duke of Lesdiguières. The site later gave way to a set of fortifications which served as a prison throughout the 19th century and until the first half of the 20th century.
Owned by the Drôme department since the 1960s, the Château des Adhémar now houses a contemporary art center with works by nationally and internationally renowned artists such as Felice Varini, Olga Kisseleva and Daniel Buren.
