Municipality of the North, in the Hauts-de-France region, Nieppe takes place about twenty kilometers from the very attractive city of Lille, in the heart of the Plaine de la Lys. It is located at the gates of Armentières and the border with Belgium, not far from Bailleul, Houplines and Deûlémont.
Ancient, the city of Nieppe developed in the Middle Ages, in particular thanks to the foundation of a Benedictine priory in the 11th century. Long Flemish, the town passed into the hands of Spain in the 16th century before joining the kingdom of France in the second half of the 17th century. If it has suffered the throes of many wars, the town has also benefited from a unique position in the most productive agricultural areas of Europe.
Built in the 17th century, the castle of Nieppe stands proudly in the historic heart of the city, on the edge of a vast park. This Flemish Gothic-style pleasure house then unveiled gables with sparrows' steps, as well as a very beautiful turret. Passed from hand to hand over the centuries, the one which was notably honored with a visit from the English King George V was largely destroyed by the bombardments of the First World War. Completely rebuilt in the 1930s, since 2000 it has housed the local history museum which traces the past of the town and its castle.
Built in the first half of the 20th century, in an elegant neo-Gothic style, the Saint-Martin church takes place on the remains of an older building. It reveals in its interior a very beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary, a Virgin with a scepter, from the 18th century.
Originally built in 1876 and rebuilt in 1929 following the ravages of the First World War, the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours church is a beautiful neo-Romanesque building in red brick with a rose window, a bell tower and a mosaic in the tympanum. Inside, you can admire an altarpiece representing the dormition of the Virgin as well as beautiful 19th century furniture.
While strolling through the town, be sure to admire the 18th century border marker with its Austrian eagle and fleur-de-lis or the remains of the old 13th century church in the form of two barrels of columns at the portal of the castle of Nieppe.
Do not miss to go on the botanical path of the park of the castle, to take the various hiking trails or to go to the fishing pond.
