Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Indre-et-Loire

Small town of more than 1700 inhabitants, Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher takes place in the heart of Indre-et-Loire, only about fifteen kilometers from Tours and its famous Place Plumereau. It is located not far from Semblançay, Chanceaux-sur-Choisille or Cerelles.

Of very ancient origin, the commune of Saint-Antoine-du-Rocher takes its name from a hermit, Antoine, who retired to a cave in the middle of the woods in the 6th century. According to legend, there is a spring dedicated to Saint Anthony of Touraine not far away, which is said to cure skin problems.

Full of charm, this city in central France still seduces its visitors with its unique atmosphere and the incredible richness of its architectural and natural heritage.

Things to see and do

Built on the hillside in the 11th century, the Saint-Antoine church underwent several transformations in the 15th and then in the 19th century. It reveals to its visitors a bell tower with a 15th century bell, a single nave and a choir with side chapels in the Flamboyant style. A large glasswork illuminates the flat apse, with in particular a 16th century stained glass window representing the fountain of life. Inside, it is also possible to admire a panel on painted wood from the 16th century, listed as a Historic Monument and representing the life of Saint Claude.

Don't forget to discover the chapel built near the grotto of Saint Anthony. Completely restored in the 19th century, then in the second half of the 20th century, it has two sarcophagi from the 6th century. The miraculous source is located right next to it.

During your walks, you can admire the dolmen called the fairy cave, the oldest vestige of the town (about 4000 years old), and listed as a Historic Monument. Let yourself also be seduced by the Moulin du Bondoneau, the old wash house rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century or the vegetable gardens. Developed along the Saulay, these are an integral part of the local heritage.

To make the most of sunny days, head for the lake, which attracts both fishermen and walkers.
