Small village in the Fecht valley, in the Haut-Rhin, Turckheim takes place at the foot of the vineyard, near Colmar and Kaysersberg. Located on the Route des Vins and the Route Verte, it also faces the Vosges trails.
Populated since the Gallo-Roman era, as evidenced by coins, tombs and pottery found on the spot, the village of Turckheim develops truly around the ninth century around the abbey of Munster. However, it is necessary to wait for the 14th century so that the municipality is illustrated under the lap of the House of Austria by becoming city of Empire. From then on, it is illustrated in the production of wine, an activity that it will not cease any more. Touched by the many quarrels between France and Germany, it suffered many damage over the centuries, without losing its charm and elegance.
The commercial city still has a beautiful architecture and a historical heritage to discover the time of a visit on the wine route.
Housed in a former 18th century vault that served as a shelter for the inhabitants during the Second World War, the memorial museum of fighting in the pocket of Colmar can discover the story of these two months of hell, presenting a viewpoint of the soldiers but also of the population.
Listed as a historic monument, the Sainte-Anne church has an elegant neo-classical façade and a Gothic bell tower. Colorful, the interior includes a statue of St. Urbain of the nineteenth century, and a bust of St. Jerome eighteenth century.
While strolling through the alleys with colorful houses and half-timbered, you can also discover the Chapel of the Brothers, the courtyard of the former abbey of Münster of the thirteenth century and listed as an historic monument, the former home of the sixteenth century, or a fountain and a well of the eighteenth century.
Listed as Historical Monuments, the 16th century town hall, the former 16th century guard house and corporate headquarters and the 17th century Hôtel des Deux Clefs deserve a stop.
Do not forget to go to the heart of the historic center to admire several exceptional houses such as that of the provost of the seventeenth century or winemaker.
Two ancient gates can also be discovered and take place in the fortifications of this medieval city.
A historical tour of more than 250 photographs reveals the heritage and history of Turckheim, the birthplace of actress Charlotte de Turckheim's family.
Between May and October, at 22h, you can experience the unique Night Watcher that crosses the city.
