Museum Stéphane Mallarmé

Leisure centre in Vulaines-sur-Seine

The Stéphane Mallarmé museum is located in the town of Vulaines-sur-Seine, in Seine-et-Marne, 5 km northeast of Fontainebleau.

It is housed in the former secondary residence of the writer, poet and art critic (1842 1898). Having discovered this inn in 1874, he first rented two rooms upstairs and then stayed there regularly alone or with his family.

The house was acquired by her daughter Geneviève in 1902 and with her husband Edmond Bonniot, she gathered there objects and souvenirs of her father, including certain pieces of furniture from her Parisian home located rue de Rome, such as a cabinet Japanese.

Listed in the Inventory in 1946, the house was acquired by the department of Seine-et-Marne in 1985, which set up a museum there, now labeled "Maison des Illustres".

In addition to furniture and objects that belonged to the author, there are works presented by his artist friends such as the painters Manet and Gauguin.

The collection also includes a library where original editions of works by Mallarmé or authors he frequented and appreciated are kept, as well as manuscripts and correspondence.

Various documents and photographs reflecting the life of Mallarmé, in the family intimacy or during public demonstrations, are also to be seen.

The garden located at the back of the building was reconstructed by the landscape gardener Florence Dollfus, who was inspired by old photos, the traditions of the time linked to the parks bordering the Seine, but also the correspondence of the poet. There are in particular flower beds and an orchard.

Note that rooms on the ground floor are dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

Open every day except Wednesday, May 1 and during the Christmas holidays. Price: 3 and 5 euros. Information on +33 1 64 23 73 27.
