Since the 18th century, the Carthusian monks have been distilling Chartreuse, a totally natural liqueur made from 130 plants using a closely-guarded secret recipe. The Élixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse, green chartreuse and yellow chartreuse are the best-known liqueurs in the range.
The Carthusian monks' distillery and the world's largest cellar can be visited at the Caves de la Chartreuse in Voiron, 25 km from the Grande Chartreuse monastery. The visit includes a screening of a 3D film and a Chartreuse liqueur tasting session.
