Martinique Zoo - Latouche habitation

Founded in 1643, the Capitaine Latouche habitation is surely the oldest plantation on the island of Martinique. Located near Latouche Cove in the municipality of Le Carbet, this old sugar plantation was devastated by the terrible volcanic eruption of the Pelée mountain on 8 May 1902, which destroyed the nearby town of Saint-Pierre. Some wonderful ruins can still be seen, however. The Anse Latouche river runs through this vast estate, which has been converted into a superb botanical garden by the creator of the Balata garden, landscape architect Jean-Philippe Thoze. On a pleasant walk around the grounds, you can see the ruins of the plantation owner's house, the old distillery, the indigo workshop and the manioc processing plant, as well as a host of wonderful palm trees, cacti, orchids, bromeliaceae and other tropical plants! Since July 2014, the Latouche estate has provided a beautiful home for animals: Martinique Zoo. Monkeys, pumas, jaguars, raccoons, iguanas and lorikeets can all be admired safely on a specially created educational trail.
