The pretty Cistercian priory of Vausse is nestled in the heart of the forest, in the lush green countryside of the Châtel-Gérard municipality in Burgundy. Founded at the turn of the 13th century, it stands in the middle of a clearing created by the monks in bygone days.
After being home to a monastic community, this haven of peace became a pottery works after the French Revolution, before being converted into a private home where the historian Ernest Petit was born in 1835. His superb study is worth a visit, but visitors will above all be attracted and enchanted by the charming Romanesque cloister.
Vausse Priory's garden is timelessly beautiful, ideal for a stroll or meditating. It is made up of three parts: the cloister garden, the garden of simples with about thirty medicinal plants, and a wild grove which leads you along a pleasant path to a small wood surrounded by walls.
