Small town of nearly 4,200 inhabitants, Châtenois takes place in the heart of the Bas-Rhin, at the foot of the Hahnenberg. It is located on the wine route, near Sélestat and about fifty kilometers from Strasbourg.
The origin of the city goes back, according to the historians, to the time of the Celts, but it is necessary to await the Romans so that it takes a real importance. Occupied by the Alamans, then by the Franks, it became property of the Bishop of Strasbourg from the thirteenth century. Strongly affected by the wars against the Armagnacs or against the troops of Charles the Bold, the town also knows the repercussions of the war of the Rustauds in the sixteenth century. Largely destroyed by a fire in the nineteenth, it is now a quieter life, having turned to tourism.
Châtenois reveals indeed an interesting architectural and historical heritage to passing visitors.
