Garchizy is a city of Nièvre, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comte region, 8 km north-west of Nevers.
The municipal area covers an area of 16 km² along the right bank of the Loire, which forms part of the boundary with the Cher department, and has a rich hydrography (many small rivers and wetlands along the Loire). The east of the town is higher, shaped hillside down to the river.
Shared in several fiefs under the Ancien Régime, common agricultural vocation (land of vineyards important until the beginning of the twentieth century, marginal now, livestock) and artisanal, Garchizy (about 3800 inhabitants) has experienced a development since the last war linked to the growth of the agglomeration of Nevers.
Its historical and natural heritage in the Loire Valley makes it a pleasant stage.
A visit of Garchizy can begin with the discovery of its historical heritage whose jewel is the Church of St. Martin, Romanesque style, built in the twelfth century, restored and enlarged in the nineteenth. Very imposing, it is distinguished by its steeple built on a square base. At the portal, the richly decorated capitals (some are copies since the originals were stored in the archaeological museum of Nevers) are remarkable. Inside, there are baptismal fonts of the sixteenth century, a cast iron font of the sixteenth, medieval sarcophagi and several oils on canvas (paintings recently restored).
In addition, three castles are visible on the territory: at the level of the hamlet of Parzy, a 16th century manor house partly restored, at the level of Azy, the ruins and elements of a feudal fortress and finally the domain of La Vernée, a nineteenth century castle surrounded by a park of 17 hectares, all built by a Russian industrialist who made use of noble materials: stone of the Loire, flint of Hungary, slates of Angers.
In terms of the "small" heritage, a walk will be marked by wash-houses, fountains and drinking troughs, sometimes ancient and decorated, which testify to the presence of numerous rivers.
