Small village of Haut-Rhin, Alsace, Illhaeusern takes place at the confluence of the Ill and the Fecht, in the heart of the plain of Alsace. This old fishing town is located fifteen kilometers from Colmar, and twenty kilometers from Riquewihr and the famous and tourist castle of Haut-Kœnigsbourg.
At the heart of the Ried, Illhaeusern was born in the 15th century with the establishment of fishermen eager to exploit the Ille and the Fecht. Then mainly occupied by the boatmen, the village was a hub of the transport of wine and cereals to Strasbourg. Reunited in the canton of Ribeauvillé in the early nineteenth century, it takes its final autonomy in 1833. Almost completely destroyed during the fighting in the pocket of Colmar in December 1944, the city is honored with the Croix de Guerre 1939 - 1945 in 1949.
While skippers and fishing have continued to decline, the municipality of Illhaeusern continues to honor these activities through various cultural events organized throughout the year. Visitors are also charmed by its architectural heritage, the authenticity of its landscapes and its famous specialty, the matelote based on freshwater fish.
