Castle Ormesson is located in the municipality of Ormesson-sur-Marne, in the Val-de-Marne, about ten kilometers south-east of Créteil, but a large part of its park is the neighboring town of Noiseau.
It was erected on a land of the domain of Amboile, in the last quarter of the sixteenth century and belongs first to the Picot family, then to Cardinal Birague and from 1630, to the family of Ormesson.
The last resident, Count Wladimir d'Ormesson (uncle of the writer Jean d'Ormesson) was aide-de-camp of Marshal Lyautey then diplomat (ambassador in Argentina and the Vatican), member of the French Academy then leader of the ORTF appointed by General De Gaulle. He lived there until 1973.
Classified as early as 1889, the castle presents a style announcing the classicism of the Louis XIII, with as materials stones and bricks. The projecting vaults (we speak of horns in architecture) that support the corner pavilions are considered remarkable by specialists, because of the excellence of the work done by the stonemason (the tubes are hemispherical on their high and angular part at their base).
The castle, which hosts famous guests (Jean de La Fontaine, Madame de Sevigne, Diderot) is surrounded by a park of 140 hectares of which a part is classified. A golf course has been built there.
The castle, where a large collection of literary archives is kept, and its park are punctually open to visit during Heritage Days or at special events. Florals are held there in September.
