The castle of Bois-le-Roi is located in the town of Nailly, in the department of Yonne, 7 km northwest of Sens.
Located to the south of the town, this stronghold erected into a barony belonging to the Couste family, originally from Sens, was endowed with a new castle during the second quarter of the 17th century.
It was Jean-Baptiste Couste, who had notably been ambassador of the King of France to the Grand Turk in Constantinople, who commissioned the work.
The main building follows a rectangular plan and comprises two levels, while being covered with mansard tiles. Corner towers frame it, one of which, dating from the 15th century, is inherited from an earlier building.
The whole is surrounded by dry moats.
A porch tower has been erected on the "east" facade which once controlled the drawbridge and which connects the dwelling to the old tower, which was transformed into a dovecote once the master of the place was ennobled by Louis XIII. This dovecote remains one of the centerpieces of the estate, with its 1,200 putlogs, a revolving ladder and an oak frame that is 500 years old!
In the 18th century, a large central wing was added to connect the other two opposite turrets.
The castle listed in the Inventory has benefited from several restoration campaigns. Private property, it hosts receptions, seminars and also cultural events.
