Things to see and do

Geodesic stele:

History:

The two steles were erected in August 1804, during the reign of Napoleon I, by the team of astronomer Maurice Henry (1763-1825) as part of the establishment of a map of Switzerland under French domination. The purpose of the operation was, a few kilometers from the Franco-Swiss border, to measure the distance separating the two stelae (19.045 km). This distance, known as the base of Ensisheim (from the name of the town of Ensisheim located approximately halfway between the two stelae), was then used for the triangulation. At the time, it was the longest base thus measured on the surface of the Earth.

The Sausheim stele should initially have been on the hill of Rixheim, due to the effects of atmospheric refraction, and a third stele should have been erected at Jungholtz-Thierenbach.

According to Charles Grad in the magazine Le Tour du monde in 1886, the southern stele originally bore a crest bearing the image of Bonaparte, which was broken by the Austrians during the invasion of 1813.

They have both been classified as historical monuments by order of December 5, 1979.
