Bourg de Gironde, in the region of New Aquitaine, Préchac is located in the Landes forest, on the edge of the Regional Natural Park of Landes de Gascogne. The town takes place not far from Villandraut, twenty kilometers from Langon and sixty kilometers from Bordeaux.
Inhabited since the Gallo-Roman era, as evidenced by the remains of the villa found under the church, the town of Préchac develops particularly around the thirteenth century. Associated with the French Revolution in the parishes of Saint-Pierre-de-Préchac, Saint-Martin-d'Insos, and Notre-Dame-de-Cazalis to form the commune of Préchac, the latter was dissolved in the middle of the 19th century to form the city of Cazalis.
Préchac today has an important architectural heritage classified or listed as a Historical Monument, thus testifying to its wealth through the centuries.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church is a Romanesque and Gothic building. Quite complex it arises on a primitive base of the eleventh century enlarged a century later by aisles and apsidioles. The bell tower dates from the 14th century.
The church of Insos, a listed building, dates back to the 14th century. Romanesque style, it is in perfect isolation in the heart of the moors. We can admire the high bell tower of the fourteenth century reinforced by two buttresses, a nave of the sixteenth century, and a triumphal arch of the twelfth century.
Former residence of the kings of Navarre, the castle of Cazeneuve is now classified as an historic monument. Settled at the confluence of the Honburens and Ciron, it was notably the property of Henri IV and his wife, Marguerite, who was assigned to residence pending the annulment of their marriage. Built in the 11th century, it was largely reworked in the 17th century. There are troglodyte caves under the castle and large medieval underground cellars. The royal apartments still house period furniture. The park, which borders the Ciron, has a lake, a mill, a wash house and a bird island. Part of the site is also classified as an historic monument. Do not miss the giant bamboo garden in the heart of the gardens.
Today in ruins, the castle of Trave is an old castle of the fourteenth century. Listed as a Historical Monument, it now has only a dungeon wall and vestiges of open access ditches.
The ruins of the Château de la Füe are also listed as Historical Monuments. They take place upstream of the castle of Trave.
While strolling in the neighborhoods, do not miss either the fortified mill of Caussarieu of the XVth century, the remains of the Protestant cemetery of Insos where were buried the workers of the glassworks, or still the nautical stop of the Ciron.
The market is held every Tuesday morning.
