The municipal museum of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the department of Yvelines, was created in 1872. Its collection was originally constituted by a bequest from Louis-Alexandre Ducastel, notary installed in the city and son of a famous merchant and collector from Paris. This first collection is made up of paintings, old books and manuscripts.
Subsequently, over the decades, through purchases or donations, the museum was significantly enriched and now includes several parts.
We thus mention a set of Flemish paintings including a painting that was once attributed to Jérôme Bosch, "The Conjurer". There are also a number of paintings representing the French and Italian schools from the 17th to the 20th century depicting religious, mythological or historical scenes, genre scenes and landscapes.
Furthermore, in addition to sculptures (polychrome wood, terracotta, bas-reliefs), there is a graphic arts cabinet in the collection which has French and Italian drawings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Finally, pieces relating to the decorative arts and works or pieces representative of Egyptian archeology and natural history complete the collections.
The museum no longer has a space dedicated to presentation to the public. On the other hand, temporary exhibitions highlighting different aspects of the collections are regularly organized at the Espace Paul and André Vera, named after these artists belonging to the Art Deco movement who lived in the city and donated their collections to it.
The site is located near the Jardin des Arts where the theater and the media library are located.
